Register now for the free webinar, "Managing Noise in Adaptive Reuse Projects," on July 21 at 2 p.m. ET to learn more from Mike Amaral and gain actionable insights you can apply to your next adaptive reuse project.

As office-to-residential conversions and other adaptive reuse projects continue to gain momentum, architects are facing a familiar challenge in a new context: controlling noise within existing buildings that were never designed for residential acoustic expectations.

In this episode, I sit down with Mike Amaral, QuietRock Product Manager for PABCO Gypsum, to preview our upcoming free webinar, "Managing Noise in Adaptive Reuse Projects," taking place on July 21 at 2 p.m. ET.

Managing Noise in Adaptive Reuse Projects

Mike Amaral, QuietRock Product Manager for PABCO Gypsum, previews the upcoming webinar, "Managing Noise in Adaptive Reuse Projects." He discusses why acoustics are a critical consideration when converting commercial buildings into residential or mixed-use spaces, explaining the limitations of relying solely on STC ratings and the impact of flanking paths and structure-borne noise.

During our conversation, Mike explains why acoustics should be considered early in the design process rather than treated as a finishing detail. While many architects are familiar with Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings, he discusses why those numbers don't always reflect real-world performance and how factors such as flanking paths, existing structural systems, and structure-borne noise can significantly affect occupant comfort.

We also explore the unique challenges of converting commercial buildings into residential and mixed-use spaces, including the hidden acoustic issues that often emerge during renovation. Mike shares practical strategies for identifying potential problem areas, collaborating effectively with acoustical consultants and structural engineers, and making informed decisions that balance acoustic performance with project budgets.

Another key topic is understanding the performance-to-cost relationship of sound-rated wall assemblies. Mike discusses how architects can recognize when additional investment delivers meaningful acoustic improvements—and when it may offer diminishing returns.

The webinar will expand on these topics with deeper technical guidance, real-world examples, and practical design recommendations to help architects create quieter, more comfortable living environments in adaptive reuse projects.

Whether you're currently working on a conversion project or simply looking to strengthen your understanding of building acoustics, this podcast offers a valuable preview of what attendees can expect during the live webinar.
