Metal Roofing: Wire Management and Best Practices for Solar PV Installations

Interactive Roundtable Discussion

Thursday, January 21 at 1.00 p.m. EST

Moderator

Mark Gies – Director of Solar Business at S-5!

Panelists

Doug Claxton – Principal & Founder of The Solar Revolution & TSR Energy

Jesse Wiederin – Founder/Owner of The Solar Guys

Shawn Haddock – Director of IT & Product Support, Senior Field Applications Specialist

Description

As solar mounting technologies evolve to improve installation efficiencies and reduce material and labor costs, often developers and installers on the job site find it daunting to keep abreast of changing technologies and adapt their operating procedures accordingly.

One trend rather unique to metal roofing is utilizing the ribs or seams of the roof as rails, wherein modules are attached directly to the roof, eliminating the need for a traditional railed system, thus saving installation time and material costs. This trend requires small shifts in thinking but will produce huge savings in labor, material and logistics. The shifts pertain to the mechanics of installation and other aspects of the project, such as wire management.

This live roundtable interactive discussion will bring together metal roofing and solar installation experts with real-world experience installing the S-5-PVKIT 2.0, a leading “direct-attach™” system. Collectively they have seen it all: As founders and owners of solar installation companies, Doug Claxton and Jesse Wiederin will bring their extensive hands-on experience with every aspect of installing and wiring solar modules and module-level power electronics. S-5!’s own Shawn Haddock has logged thousands of hours on metal roofs providing technical support and training to installers, as well as installing solar himself.

Together, they will discuss one shift in thinking―wire management practices for installing rail-less solar PV systems.  The focus will be on low-slope commercial projects, where wire management gets complicated from the sheer size of the project, as well as integrating module-level power electronics.
