This recent recognition adds to an extraordinary legacy. Wuennenberg was the first architect to receive the association’s S. Earl Thompson Award in 2011, followed by the Outstanding Corporate Friend Award in 2023, and he now joins a select group of professionals honored with the Parthenon Award.

While the Parthenon Award is most often presented to housing practitioners and university leaders, Wuennenberg is among the few architects recognized for his profound influence on the student housing industry. The award nomination process requires a sponsor and a minimum $5,000 donation on behalf of the recipient to the association’s scholarship fund.

“The thing I was most humbled by was the number of clients and friends who donated for my award,” said Wuennenberg. “When I saw that over 50 people had donated for me to receive this honor, I was taken aback. I am so grateful to my associates for sponsoring and championing this award for me.”

For more than 30 years, Wuennenberg has partnered with colleges and universities across the country to create residential environments that foster student success, strengthen campus communities, and enhance the student experience. His collaborative approach and passion for higher education have earned the trust and respect of peers throughout the industry. His passion for research and the development of new concepts is evident in his award-winning designs. He has published numerous scholarly articles throughout his career, participated in national webinars, written self-published books, and given numerous lectures at national ACUHO-I conferences on the topics of student housing and dining.

His scholarship, mentorship, conference leadership, and pioneering work in residence hall design have left an enduring legacy that continues to shape the future of collegiate housing. The Parthenon Society recognition honors not only his remarkable professional achievements but also his lasting impact on generations of housing professionals and the students they serve.”

Wuennenberg graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1986. He is a registered architect in Missouri and 18 additional states, and he is an ACUHO-I Foundation Member.

He continues to leave an indelible mark on the architectural landscape, enriching communities and inspiring future generations of designers.
