The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is granting Honorary AIA Membership to Rebecca Johnson, Executive Director of AIA Philadelphia and President of the Philadelphia Center for Architecture and Design, for her extraordinary contributions to elevating architecture as a force for civic good.

With a dynamic career as a real estate development attorney, community advocate, and trailblazing leader, Johnson has empowered architects and the design community to shape public policy, foster equity, and build stronger, more resilient communities.

Honorary AIA Membership is conferred upon individuals who have made notable contributions to the advancement of the architecture profession but are not otherwise eligible for AIA membership. Candidates must meet a host of criteria to be considered for honorary membership, Additionally, candidates must be nominated by a member of the AIA Board of Directors, Strategic Council, chapter leadership, or Knowledge Communities. Nominations are subject to the review and consideration of a jury.

Johnson is the founder of the BUILDPhilly Coalition, a groundbreaking partnership of over 20 real estate and construction organizations. Under her leadership, BUILDPhilly has hosted two high-profile mayoral forums—in 2016 and 2024—that brought critical issues such as affordable housing, urban resilience, and climate action to the forefront of public discourse in Philadelphia. These forums ensured that architects played a central role in shaping the city’s future.

Johnson’s efforts have elevated AIA members as thought leaders in sustainable design, facilitating testimony before City Council on topics like green building codes and climate resiliency. During her leadership, AIA Philadelphia’s Associate membership grew by an extraordinary 130 percent. She spearheaded the formation of the Philadelphia Emerging Architects group (PEA), combining the Young Architects Forum and the Associates Committee to create a dynamic network that hosts over eight major programs annually.

Learn more about Johnson’s work and contributions to the profession.
