WAYNE, N.J. — GAF announced at Greenbuild 2013 a milestone in its role as a sustainability leader. GAF received NSF-ISO compliant Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for its EverGuard® TPO and EverGuard Extreme® roofing products. An EPD is an internationally recognized, standardized method used to analyze and communicate the lifecycle, environmental and human health impacts of products or services. Impacts addressed include areas such as energy use, emissions to air, soil, water and waste generation.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) will launch the new LEED v4 green building rating system at Greenbuild this week, which includes major changes to the Materials and Resources category, specifically seeking more transparency around the environmental and health impacts of building materials and products. The GAF EPDs contribute directly toward achieving the Whole Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction and Environmental Product Disclosure credits in LEED v4.

As part of the GAF v4-Ready Roofing Manufacturer campaign for LEED, GAF is also contributing with Health Product Declarations (HPD) for its EnergyGuard Polyiso Insulation as well as the EverGuard® TPO roofing products. HPDs disclose product content and related health concerns that are not typically reported. Two years ago, GAF participated in the industry pilot program through the Health Product Collaborative. Since the pilot, the system has grown and improved dramatically, and will now contribute to the LEED v4 credit for Material Ingredient Reporting for Building Product Disclosure and Optimization.

“As USGBC Platinum Members, we are proud to support the introduction of LEED version 4,” said Martin Grohman, GAF director of sustainability. “We feel it is a major step forward. Project teams targeting Building Product Disclosure and Optimization credits can find our full listings on GreenWizard and ecoScorecard.”

GAF products also contribute to additional LEED credits such as Heat Island Reduction through cool roofing, its GardenScape Roofing Systems and recycled content in numerous GAF products, including asphalt shingles. Sustainable manufacturing practices are incorporated at GAF manufacturing plants, and two plants hold UL Environmental Claims Validation Landfill Diversion certifications.
