Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance Wins Five RoofPoint Excellence in Design Awards

December 21, 2011

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance is proud to announce that it has won five 2011 RoofPoint Excellence in Design Awards. This is the inaugural year for the awards.

The RoofPoint program from the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing (Center) is a voluntary, consensus-based green rating system developed to help building owners and designers select non-residential roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits. RoofPoint serves as a simple, transparent and professional measure to validate that new and replacement roof systems are designed, installed and maintained in accordance with the best sustainable practices available today.

With the 2011 launch of RoofPoint, the Center established the RoofPoint Excellence in Design Awards as a way to recognize exceptional projects that meet RoofPoint’s mission and criteria. There were 10 categories of awards. More than 40 entries were submitted. Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance projects won Excellence in Design Awards in four categories, as well as an honorable mention.

Tremco’s winning projects and their Excellence in Design Awards categories are:

• The Sam Nunn Federal Center (Atlanta, Ga.), Excellence in Life Cycle Management. Distinguished by its efficient re-use of original roofing materials

• College of Marin Fine Arts Building (Kentfield, Calif.), Excellence in Innovation. This green roof incorporated native, drought-tolerant vegetation and a high R-value insulation system, complementing a campus-wide geothermal heating source in Northern California

• Tremco Incorporated Headquarters Renovation (Beachwood, Ohio), Advancing Sustainable Roofing. The comprehensive renovation of a 40-year-old building features four sustainable roofing systems – a 9,000-square-foot vegetated roof with almost 16,000 plants and 46 species, a pathway of slate recycled from the building, and food and flowers used in the cafeteria; a white reflective TPA membrane; an all-white built-up system featuring white gravel set in a white adhesive; and two rooftop photovoltaic installations for renewable energy.

• Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance, Public Sector Leadership. RoofPoint projects submitted included those installed on schools and municipal structures, encompassing photovoltaic and vegetated integrated systems; learning stations; renovated historical structures; a Native American artifacts museum utilizing advanced daylighting, and harvesting ceremonial natural vegetation from the construction site that was replanted on the vegetated roofing system; and various other projects that have received prior recognition for their sustainability in design.

• Tremco’s Honorable Mention is in the Global Leadership category. Projects included restoration of a roof using 1,000-year-old technologies at a Viking ship-rebuilding site in Newfoundland and Labrador; a LEED platinum new school in Windsor, Ontario; and a corporate complex for a provincial utility (hydro-electric) in Manitoba that utilized active and passive heating combined with a highly insulated vegetated roof for energy conservation and sustainability. This structure also was awarded the “Best Tall Building of the Americas” for 2009.

Paul Mitchell, administrator of Strategic Initiatives & Alliances for Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance and the liaison to the Center said, “We want to congratulate everyone involved in these projects – our customers, professional clients, sales representatives, WTI associates and contractors. While the awards are a wonderful acknowledgement of their efforts, they are only possible because of the market’s growing understanding of the importance of sustainable building practices.”
