Content Is King: For Want of an Edge, the Roof Was Lost
After reading the reports compiled after major hurricanes by the Roofing Industry Committee on Weather Issues (RICOWI), it looks like the roofing industry could update the old adage this way: “For want of an edge, the roof was lost.”
The executive summary of the RICOWI report after Hurricane Ike includes this passage in its examination of damage to low-slope roofs: “The major problems were most often caused by edge failure, leading to membrane dislodgement and/or punctures and tears due to flying debris. Since 2003 the International Building Code (IBC) has required that edge metal be designed and installed in accordance with ANSI/SPRI/ES-1. Compliance with the standard could significantly reduce the damage from hurricanes.”
