The Roofing Alliance, the foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), announced the launch of its 7th annual student competition.  This well-known event will take place during the April 2021 International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas.  Roofing professionals are asked to share information with construction management schools in their areas, encouraging the formation of student teams to participate.

This year’s competition will challenge university-level construction management students through written and oral presentations on their roofing knowledge, project management capabilities and presentation skills. The teams research the project, review the plans and specifications, and assemble a full estimate and qualified bid package proposal that is submitted to a board of Roofing Alliance judges.

This year, the teams will be tasked with submitting a qualified bid package for a new roof system on the Raiders practice facility, part of the new Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center in Henderson, Nevada.  Working with Commercial Roofers Inc. of Las Vegas owner Dennis Conway, the founder of the student competition, the Roofing Alliance student competition committee has prepared the following timeline.

Oct. 12, 2020 – competition information to schools
Nov. 16, 2020 – teams to advise their intent to participate
Feb. 8, 2021 – written proposals will be due
March 5, 2021 – finalist teams will be advised
April 13, 2021 – finalist teams arrive in Las Vegas
April 15, 2021 – finalist teams give oral presentations (either in person in Las Vegas or virtually)
April 15, 2021 – winning teams announced at NRCA’s Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception

“We know that many schools are not allowing faculty or students to travel – so we will be prepared to have finalist teams present oral presentations virtually, if needed,” stated Allen Lancaster, current student competition chair and vice president of Metalcrafts A Tecta America Co., Savannah, GA. “But we are hopeful for our best competition yet.  We want the roofing industry to share this with construction management schools that they may be associated with and ask them to consider participating.”
