DENVER — Johns Manville (JM) has announced the publication of its 2012 Sustainability Report, We Build Environments. The publication can be viewed in two formats (PDF and e-zine) on the company’s website.

“Our culture of sustainability is a great source of pride for the company and our employees, and we’re pleased to share our progress with our stakeholders,” JM President and CEO Mary Rhinehart said. “We intend to capitalize on our commitment to sustainability to ensure that we are better prepared to meet both the opportunities and challenges of our dynamic world, and that we continue to deliver safe products that delight our customers.”

The report, which received an Application Level Check by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), presents the company’s approach to sustainability and its progress toward achieving its long-term sustainability goals. In addition to information and case studies associated with energy efficiency, reducing the energy and carbon intensity of its operations, reducing solid waste and increasing use of recycled materials in several areas of its business, the report also highlights the company’s social responsibility in the areas of safety, employee practices and community investment. This year’s report includes 18 fully reported performance indicators applying the GRI 3.1 guidelines.

According to Dr. Tim Swales, JM’s vice president of corporate research and development and chief sustainability officer, the company can bolster its ability to serve customers sustainably by continually renewing its commitment to innovation.

“At JM, we believe there’s a strong relationship between sustainability and innovation, with one often driving the other,” Swales said. “Sustainability is becoming increasingly important to our key stakeholders, and companies can either choose to embrace this opportunity or ignore it. We’ve chosen to embrace it. Sustainability ensures our business and thought processes are focused on new dimensions of opportunity for future growth.”
