Ensuring Building Code Compliance With Advanced Data Analytics

People increasingly utilize advanced data analytics tools to verify building code compliance during projects. In addition to saving time, this approach enhances safety by preventing severe oversights. Knowing what’s possible so far could inspire you to apply similar strategies to your work. 


Automating Code Compliance Checks for Better Productivity

Government officials in Abu Dhabi developed a tool that combines artificial intelligence with building information modeling tools and streamlines the code-checking process. Users submit 2D BIM drawings and the technology transforms them into 3D versions. 

Next, the program automatically reviews the code and checks for noncompliance with the capital’s building requirements. Those involved with this project believe it will smooth the project development stage and facilitate information retrieval. 

Another part of the project involves an AI chatbot that gives users instant access to code information and provides multilingual support. Together, these data-driven algorithm-based tools should significantly increase the chances of successful outcomes and stress-free compliance. 


Maximizing Fire Code Compliance 

Some consider code compliance a hassle, especially when the relevant rules seem overly picky. However, in most cases, these building standards ensure safety for a structure’s occupants and others affected by it.

One example comes from a university team that developed an advanced data analysis tool to check for fire code compliance. It uses machine learning and computer-vision techniques to analyze physical and digital blueprints for potential fire code issues. This method accelerates a previously time-consuming and labor-intensive process.

As the AI tool processes the information, it can identify the locations of different rooms, interpret the details of various features and materials used and classify parts of a building by their intended uses. The tool relies on a knowledge-based algorithm to assess fire code compliance. An essential part of this information processing involves checking the maximum travel distance, or how far a person must move in the building to get to the nearest fire exit. 

After those checks are finished, artificial intelligence suggests potential redesign decisions to make the building compliant. This use case is an excellent example of how advanced analytics can improve resource utilization. Once people identify issues, they can determine the number of people, specific equipment or amount of supplies needed to complete a project successfully.


Reducing Project Rework and Delays 

Identifying building code-related problems can require architects, designers and other professionals to make last-minute adjustments to achieve compliance. However, those changes can lengthen a project’s timeline and increase overall costs. 

Fortunately, the respective code-related information is generally readily available for particular cities, encouraging tech professionals to design solutions that can process that data and provide suggestions to minimize issues. Many building codes also apply regardless of location. For example, building codes in most of the U.S. require basement apartments to have egress windows for people to use during emergencies. 

One data analysis project for Korean structures concerned researchers who built a predictive modeling algorithm that analyzed a building’s data to find potential code violations that may require design changes. Those involved hoped to apply advanced algorithms to site analysis, checking whether proposed buildings were appropriate distances from site boundaries and surrounding roads.

The researchers anticipated that this approach could save significant time and prevent issues requiring changes due to compliance problems. The team also built their algorithms to analyze specifics similarly to how humans do, which should maximize their effectiveness. In addition to assessing the site, the tool automatically applied the associated building codes and proposed the necessary changes. Users could also input multiple variables about parking lots and other open spaces for optimal results. 


An Exciting Future for Advanced Data Analytics and Compliance

Complying with the relevant building codes is essential for safe, successful projects of all sizes and types. These real-life examples demonstrate why you and others in your industry should look forward to additional possibilities while examining how to implement use cases like those described here.
