ClarkDietrich Launches ASTM F2322 Barrier Mesh Walls

ClarkDietrich unveils ASTM F2322-tested barrier mesh wall systems with Grade 3 and Grade 4 ratings

ClarkDietrich has introduced two new barrier mesh wall systems that have been independently tested for impact resistance under ASTM F2322, the industry standard for evaluating secure wall assemblies against physical assault.

The new 9-gauge BM50-9-Modified and 13-gauge BM50-13-Modified barrier mesh systems achieved ASTM F2322 Grade 3 and Grade 4 impact resistance, respectively, when installed as complete cold-formed steel framed wall assemblies. The Grade 4 system was constructed with 54 mil cold-formed steel studs spaced 16 inches on center, while the Grade 3 system used 97 mil framing spaced 12 inches on center.

Developed specifically for detention and correctional facilities, ASTM F2322 evaluates the ability of complete wall assemblies to withstand repeated physical attacks. Unlike component-only testing, the standard subjects entire wall systems to sustained impacts using blunt and sharp weighted objects while allowing testers to target vulnerable areas such as joints, fastener lines, framing members and wall edges. Grade 3 assemblies must withstand 200 impacts over 20 minutes, while Grade 4 assemblies must endure 100 impacts within 10 minutes.

"The mesh is only one piece of the equation," said Christopher Little, senior category manager for ClarkDietrich. "If the framing is undersized or improperly detailed, the wall can fail at the studs or connections even when the mesh stays intact. The only way to know a system truly performs is through documented, third-party testing of the complete assembly, framing included."

Testing was conducted March 9-13, 2026, at Intertek Testing Laboratory in York, Pennsylvania. ClarkDietrich notes that the published ASTM F2322 ratings apply only to the complete assemblies that were tested, including framing, reinforcement, barrier mesh, attachments, finishes and transitions. Full test reports are available upon request.
