The Chicago Architecture Center recently opened its newest exhibit, The Prize is the Beginning: Illuminating Architectural Excellence Through the Americas Prize, to the public. The selected work, which is recognized by the juried biennial Americas Prize, underscores that there is more than a single accepted definition of design excellence.
The Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP) is in its 12th year and is the premier award celebrating contemporary architecture across the 35 countries of North, South and Central America. The exhibition explores how MCHAP straddles borders to help foster greater appreciation for the diversity and dynamism of North, Central, and South American architecture, while underwriting research and publication and supporting emerging practices.
The exhibition includes gorgeous photographs and video segments of some of the best architecture across Central, South, and North America. Through interviews, testimonials, and local narratives, the exhibition goes beyond a simple survey of nominees and award-winners to tell a richer story of impact over time — of buildings within their communities, and of MCHAP on academia and the international design profession.
The projects all push the boundaries of conventional “excellence,” and are organized into five categories: Doing More with Less, Working with What We Have, Generosity, Agents of Change, and Learning from Each Other.
“The Prize is the Beginning’ provides a real-world glimpse into architectural and design excellence in the Americas,” said Eleanor Gorski, CEO and President, Chicago Architecture Center. “The exhibition delves into how artists and designers find abundance within creative constraints, enrich built environments with community, and embrace differences to foster deeper understanding. MCHAP was developed by Dirk Denison at the College of Architecture at Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology; hosting this exhibition gives us the opportunity to celebrate IIT as an institution that prioritizes connecting Chicago to international architects and academics.” [KG1] [EF2]
“The exhibition marks an important moment of recognition and assessment for the work of the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize,” said the Director of MCHAP, Dirk Denison. “Collaborating with CAC has been a new and valuable opportunity to reflect on what we’ve learned, with the curatorial team re-reading the projects through resonant themes, and at the same time, the partnership is a conduit to reach a larger audience who is interested in architecture and the quality of the built world, outside of the professional and academic communities.”
According to Denison, the exhibit’s title comes from the idea that winning the MCHAP prize is truly only the beginning of the journey. “MCHAP’s goal is to lay groundwork for these conversations to continue growing on their own, contributing to a greater understanding of how architecture impacts the vibrant, complex world around us."
The Prize is the Beginning: Illuminating Architectural Excellence Through the Americas Prize will be on display through October 26, 2025. To learn more about the exhibition, visit architecture.org.
[KG1]Lauren: This language is maybe not right; got a better way to phrase this?
[EF2]Agree - this exhibit doesn't really celebrate our city's architecture, but it does highlight and celebrate IIT as an institution that prioritizes connecting to Chicago to international architects and academics.
