Steel can play a vital and cost-effective role in replacing America’s aging bridge infrastructure, and a free one-hour webinar will explore sustainable steel options for solving a top national priority identified by the Biden administration. The webinar, “Building a Sustainable Infrastructure with Short Span Steel Bridges,” will be presented by three industry experts and held on Tuesday, May 11 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. EST. It will be hosted by the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA), American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and American Galvanizers Association (AGA). Registration details are available here.

“Bridges provide vital links in the nation’s infrastructure network. Yet, more than 220,000 of them, representing 36 percent of the national bridge inventory, need major repair work or replacement,” said Kevin Dempsey, AISI President and CEO. “With new innovative materials, designs and protection systems available today, the American steel industry is well positioned to build bridges that will last well into the next century, and possibly beyond. We don’t need to wait—there are sustainable solutions that are ready to implement right now.”

Details of those sustainable solutions will be discussed by three industry experts who will provide their insights on these topics:

  • The current national proposed infrastructure plans, with information specifically related to investment in our nation’s bridges — Presented by Senior Director of Government Relations Brett Smith, American Iron and Steel Institute
  • Sustainability of the American steel industry, with ideas on how to create a more sustainable infrastructure with steel bridge solutions — Presented by Vice President of Sustainability Mark Thimons, American Iron and Steel Institute
  • Material and coating options to extend the life of a steel bridge 100 years and beyond — Presented by Marketing Director John Krzywicki, American Galvanizers Association

The webinar is being held as part of an annual event hosted by United for Infrastructure known as “United for Infrastructure: A Week to Champion America’s Infrastructure,” which takes place May 10-14, 2021. Now in its ninth year, participating organizations host events during the designated week to build awareness of and educate policymakers and citizens about the infrastructure challenges in the United States. AISI is an affiliate member of United for Infrastructure 2021.

“Building a Sustainable Infrastructure with Short Span Steel Bridges” is recommended for bridge professionals, legislators and concerned citizens. It is being presented as a special addition to AGA’s Galvanize It! webinar series and is accredited by AIA and RCEP to provide 1.0 LU/PDH (HSW Hour). Registration details are available here.
