This infographic from Norwich University explores how earthquakes have influenced civil engineering techniques. The U.S. Geological Survey predicted in 2008 that a 7.8-magnitude earthquake would cause about 1,800 deaths and $213 billion worth of damage. The graphic illustrates the technology and solutions created by engineers that have resulted in deaths caused by earthquakes to diminish from 3,263 people from 1811-1960, to 409 people from 1960-present.
