There are various fluid-applied air barrier membrane systems to select from and to install behind building façades. How do we know which one to choose and why? An overview of the different membrane chemistries and their pros and cons will be discussed, as well as the value that fluid-applied air barriers can bring to overall façade assemblies.

Developments in fluid-applied air barrier detailing and critical transitions will be shared as we evaluate several project configurations. We will examine conditions of membrane installation and sequencing within the context of quality control protocols for fluid-applied air barriers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the various types and chemistries of fluid-applied air barrier membrane systems.
  2. Explore the advantages of using a fluid-applied air barrier membrane system behind different façades and rainscreen assemblies.
  3. Identify the design details and transitions critical to fluid-applied air barrier membranes.
  4. Examine construction sequences and quality control protocols of fluid-applied air barrier membranes within façade assemblies.
