Late last year Roofing Contractor teamed up with BNP Media Market Research to conduct the State of the Industry survey, which was sponsored by GAF Materials Corporation. The survey designed to find out how contractors fared in 2010 and how they expect their businesses to perform this year and over the next three years. We also wanted to find out the percentage of contractors using the Internet, websites, smart phones and various new social platforms for business purposes.

We will publish the results in our February issue, but if you want a sneak peek at the data, we’ll be holding a webinar on Feb. 10 covering highlights from the survey and exploring industry trends.

As far as new technology goes, some of the results might surprise you. Here’s a sampling of some f the survey data: The vast majority of contractors in our survey - 97 percent - have access to the Internet at work, and more than three-quarters of them access the Internet more than once a day. About 80 percent of the contractors surveyed have a company website, and of those with a website, 61 percent have a professional Web hosting or design service design, build and manage it. The average annual cost for a website, along with search engine optimization, was $1,634.
